Scholarship Recipient: Cody Mehlhorn

I had the pleasure of judging design student portfolios for the 2012 AIGA Portfolio One on One Event. It was a great experience, and truly a tough job to sort through all of the great work and select winners for the four different scholarships. I wanted to take a minute to show off the work of Cody Mehlhlorn, recipient of the Clockwork Interactive Scholarship.
Ocean Conservation Group
From Cody: The Ocean Conservation Group is an organization concerned with keeping Big Blue as clean as can be. The accompanying identity and materials were designed to suggest cleanliness, vitality and simplicity as well as allude to the dynamic nature of our oceans.
What struck me with this first portfolio piece was the impact acheived through the combination of photography and simple and bold typography. There is also a clear understanding of web standards and conventions seen in the layout choices, navigation, and other elements.
It was also great to see such attention placed on the web site and other extensions of the brand. Often in student portfolios, a web site and something very tactical like a direct mail piece are last minute additions.
UWEC Cycling Team
From Cody: The UWEC Cycling Team, which has finished as high as 4th at Nationals in recent years is virtually unknown to the students at Eau Claire. Working with them, I developed a website that suggests the dynamic nature of the sport of cycling and delivers information effectively to users.
Again, it was great to see a web-focused project, with a lot of thought put into the context and reasoning behind the medium of choice. From a design standpoint the site is clean, with great background elements and a unique and memorable photo treatment that has been extended through the printed pieces.
A Well-Rounded Portfolio
Cody's design skills certainly translate to other media as well and I'd be remiss to leave out some packaging and ad samples. You can learn more about these projects and his others at http://codymehlhorn.com/.
From Cody: A huge thanks goes out to Clockwork and the invaluable opportunity they have provided me. Just the fact that they looked over my work is great, but the scholarship, or what it means to me, is tough to put into words.
